Fresh pears!

We don't have the prettiest trees in our yard since the wind is terrible here....they all look haggardly and tilt to one side! The second owner of the house had a small orchard on the property at one time but all that remains now is a small group of Blueberry bushes,a Persimmon tree, several Black Walnut trees, and a Pear tree. The Pear tree and Walnut trees produce fruit every other year and lucky us they produce fruit at the same time! *sigh* This keeps us busy for a while trying to keep them picked up other wise they rot and become VERY nasty! Our friends and family cringe when this time of year rolls around...they know they will see us on their doorstep with bags of pears begging them to take them other wise we have to throw them away! Yesterday I picked a few but they aren't ripe yet. They will ripen up in the next few days though. Personally I think they taste more like apples then pears since they have a light crisp taste. I recently found a recipe for pear bread so I might give that a try when we get sick of eating them by themselves?!?!?!

I decided a few weeks ago that I needed a new bench for the foot of our bed. I searched locally and even drove to KC but had no luck finding the perfect bench. I then turned my search to the internet where I found a few benches that were what I had in mind but the shipping was as much or even more than the bench itself! Finally one day while looking at JC Penney's on line for something else I found this bench!!! The dimensions were perfect and shipping was free but.... the color and fabric were all wrong! I decided to buy it anyways and make it over. My poor husband thought I had lost my mind when he saw the bench and I told him of my plans. So, I started the transformation while he was at work one day by first painting it. I then ordered the fabric which was a lot easier to find than the bench itself and recovered it. Today I bought the gimp and nail head trim while out running errands. I had to go to two different stores for the decorative nail heads because the first store only had three packages in stock. I am pretty happy with how it turned out.....even my husband was pretty impressed which doesn't happen very often!!!

A trip to the lake......

A covered bridge leading over one of the water gardens.......

Blooming water lilies.....

Gazebo overlooking bigger water garden.....

Beautiful blue sky...didn't last long though!

A cove by the yacht club off the main part of the lake......

So peaceful and serene.....

Oops! We're wedding crashers! This is actually a structure made of tree timbers!

Ohhh....isn't this a gorgeous Weeping Willow?

A little stone cottage where a birthday party was being held.....

A beautiful old tree fallen from the storm...such a shame!

This gazebo was donated by a family.....

Big beautiful Canna Lilies.......

Yesterday after taking the fur babies to the doggie day spa we stopped by Lake Shawnee to see how much water they were letting out at the spillway. Lake Shawnee is a beautiful lake located in Topeka, Kansas. Construction started on the lake in 1935 and was finished on September 3,1939. The lake is more like a city park with a lake in the center than the typical lake which is mostly for camping and fishing! It is very well manicured with a rose garden, multiple water gardens,a yacht club, docks for fishing, softball diamonds, camp ground,a swim beach, storm shelters,a golf course, and a walking path around the entire lake! The lake has always been a huge part of our lives and we hope that when our current home sells that we will be able to live in a house close by the lake again. Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Take two......

Take one!

Take two....in brown!

I showed you all the cutie pie's doggie bed a couple of weeks ago all done in black check. I mentioned the skirt didn't hang straight because of the braces underneath and you all emailed me wonderful solutions to the problem. I never did alter the skirt though because I decided to go with brown as an accent color in our bedroom instead of the black. So, of course that meant making new bedding for the dog bed! I painstakingly sewed slits in the little skirt so it would hang straight which of course took hours. I got it all done and started putting it on the bed only to realize I forgot to make the slit in the center for the very front brace!!!!!!! At that point I was out of patience so I took the scissors and just cut a slit and then whip stitched it up by hand. *sigh* So much for it looking professional I suppose?!?!? In case your wondering why I didn't go with the same little accent pillow it is because Pottery Barn is currently sold out of it in the brown! The babies don't seem to mind though....they tried it out and deemed it just as comfy as the first one! LOL...

I recently added this little wicker bottle to my collection of jugs.....isn't it just the cutest? I have never seen one this size so of course I just *had* to have it! It isn't my biggest bargain but for $13 I thought I did pretty good?!?!
