Goodbye wood stove!

This is how the hearth in the dining room used to look before we started phase 2 of the renovations which is when we removed the hearth and wood stove. We commonly referred to it as,"The Toe Breaker" because it protruded out into the dining room so far it was impossible to walk around it without stubbing your toe! I can't even tell you how many toes I had broken on that stupid thing!!!! Of course the location of the wood stove was also impractical since it was in the dining room instead of the living room. We tried to make it work by installing a high efficiency wood stove and eventually I painted all the brick white which made a huge difference in lightening up the room. However hauling wood and getting up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire got old really fast!!!! After many hours of jack hammering thru 8 inches of concrete we were able to say goodbye to the ugly thing with crooked bricks and uneven mantle shelf....hooray!!!!!!!

What would we put in the spot now that we had all that extra space?

This beauty.... which holds a small part of my ironstone collection......

A before & after.....

Before

After
10 hours &4 coats of paint later

The pediment

Detail on the door......
As though I didn't have enough going on before the photo shoot with major renovations and all I decided one day that I absolutely HAD to paint this armoire in the living room. The piece is an antique reproduction......or in other words it is a reproduction of an earlier piece but is so old it is an antique now!!! We found it on Craig's List about a year ago for $600 which in my opinion was an absolute steal?!?!? It took some convincing to sway Mr. D into thinking painting the piece was a good idea. After all it was attractive as is but the color was just a bid "odd" because the piece is teak unlike all the other pieces in our living room. The battleship grey undercoat seriously scares even the most experienced painter.....but luckily once the other colors are added it instantly comes to life and starts to look fabulous!!! I love how all the detail really pops now as before it was lost. There is even a letter "C" on the bottom which is the first initial of our last name which makes the piece even more special.
Have a great weekend everyone!!!!!
